Two years ago, I was in such a bad mental space. I felt unsafe, uncomfortable, and to top it all off, my confidence had plummetted lower than it had ever been. Some of it had to do with external circumstances (I had just graduated from University and was at a total loss as to what’s next), but most of it just felt like a dark cloud looming over it at all times. I later learned that I was dealing with generalized anxiety disorder, but not before having some of the biggest meltdowns of my life. This was around the time of the Paris and Brussels terrorist attacks, and I was living in Brussels at this point of my life. I understand the point of those attacks was to seep fear into the bones of people living in these areas, but my brain took that to an extreme. I couldn’t properly sleep, I kept waking up in the middle of the night and crying, leaving the house was hard, and life was utterly miserable.
This, of course, was short-lived (thank goodness!).
At the point in time, I scoped the internet for anything that might make me feel better. Guided meditations, online counselors, internet friends, self-help books. It wasn’t until I figured out how to manage my immediate anxiety, that I also learned how to let go of my crippling fear altogether. For me, breathing exercises were the key to convincing my brain that everything truly is okay and that I’m safe. It took a lot of repetition and practice, but with the help of a therapist, I learned how to fully utilize my breathing to help me live an enjoyable day – to – day life.
Because I know how desperate I was, I know there must be someone out there who really needs to be comforted and cared for. This is why I have started creating guided meditations for various occasions. If you, like myself, need some help coping with anxiety, here’s a short guided meditation for you.
